Oh My Word

Passing by a store in Toronto’s Junction area called ‘Hearing Dentures’ stopped me in my tracks and I exclaimed “Hell’s teeth”. Obviously it must be Hearing and Dentures, two separate disciplines under one roof. One might call this a blinding glimpse of the obvious but the thought of dentures that can hear is beyond words except to say the idea is as scarce as hens teeth, but this picture paints a thousand words and something to sink our teeth into.

The comedy game show ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’ comes to mind. Imagine what the likes of participants Ryan, Colin and Wayne would come up with given the line, Hearing Dentures?

Apparently dental work can cause a loss of hearing albeit temporary so would hearing dentures enhance conversations with the dentist? These are normally one sided affairs with the dentist putting words in one’s mouth. It is difficult to respond to the dentist’s question “How is the family?” when one has mouth full of tubes, mirrors and drills. The patient’s words cannot be fitted in edgewise.

The idiom to ‘eat ones words’ comes to mind. That is not a bad way to digest the incoming message. Of course listening to what folks say is so important, except if it’s a politician where they literally may have to eat their words after they have minced words and lied through their teeth. Thick skins block the hearing of criticism which won’t work in the case of those hens teeth.

Hearing Dentures could become extremely important when one is long in the tooth. It would save thousands of dollars spent on hearing aids and then there is the cost of dental work. It adds up so why not limit it to dentures that can hear. Perhaps that is why the older folks keep their mouths open all the time. They are really listening intently to the conversation so don’t be fooled. The snoring is them swallowing the words they hear.

Mark my word the tooth fairy will get a fortune from hearing dentures that replace sweet teeth.

Don’t breathe a word of this.

On my word honor.
